Real Brides, Real Weddings

Clackum, May Wedding
All it takes is a single handshake, a smile or a casual introduction to create sparks between two people. Sometimes, all it takes is the persistence of a guy sitting directly behind you in a college honors class, whispering to you and often getting you in trouble by your professors. This is the story of Sami and Alex, two sparks destined to meet and illuminate.

Both Sami and Alex are Florida natives, Sami from Bristol and Alex from Chipley. They married at the breathtaking Emerald Grande Resort in Destin, FL., on March 12, 2010. Sami decided to do the wedding planning herself, and did a marvelous job at tying in all the creative details of this elegant affair.

Sami and Alex’s story starts at Chipola College where they met in an honors class. Sami sat on the first row, and Alex sat directly behind her, often whispering to her during class, and getting them both into trouble. Soon after, the pair began dating. When it came to time to propose, Alex took Sami to their favorite local café for lunch, and then they took a walk around the historic district of beautiful Marianna to look at gardens and local architecture. In the middle of the courtyard, beside the fountain, Alex decided that would be the perfect spot. There, he knelt down on one knee and asked for Sami’s hand in marriage.

When it came time to pick a venue for their wedding, there was just one tiny problem with the beach atmosphere: Sami wasn’t thrilled about having sand all around during what she envisioned to be a traditional wedding. So, the pair decided on The Emerald Grande’s Captain Deck which encompassed all that is beachy, without the sand to go along with it. This match was perfect for the couple!

Terri Smith from Terri Smith Photography in Tallahassee, FL., was right there to capture all the loving moments of the day between the couple, and all of the laughing and fun had by the guests. The Captain’s Deck provided a beautiful backdrop for shooting the passion and happiness between Sami and Alex all day long.

80 guests attended the ceremony, and Sami walked down the aisle in a simple A-Line ivory satin gown with a sweetheart neckline, beading on the bodice and a chapel train. Her ivory fingertip veil had the same beautiful beading as the bodice on her gown. A simple strand of pearls and a pair of aquamarine teardrop earrings (given to her by Alex) completed Sami’s simply elegant look. Stashed away on Sami’s maid-of-honor were two handkerchiefs, one from Sam’s late Grandmother, and the other from Alex’s Grandmother.

Sami’s bridesmaids wore different styles of black, tea-length dresses with teal sashes. They carried hand-tied bouquets of white hydrangea with black satin. Alex’s groomsmen wore simple three button black tuxes with an ivory pocket square, complete with simple boutonnieres made of but a single white rose.

Alex wore a simple Calvin Klein two button suit with a black vest and black filigree. He too wore an ivory pockets square, and his boutonniere was made of a single ivory rose framed by a black and white quail feather.
The flower girls gently tossed white rose petals down the aisle for Sami to walk on, and the mothers and grandmothers carried a hand-tied bouquet of white, long-stem roses.

Sami was escorted down the aisle by her mother and stepfather. During the unity ceremony, Sami and Alex poured sand into an hourglass to symbolize the unity and timelessness of their union and love. Alex’s childhood Pastor, Brother John Dickinson, performed the lovely ceremony.
The Emerald Grande provided the perfect place for the reception, where the celebration continued. The Emerald Grande also catered, and provided mouth-watering hors d’oeuvres before a dinner of chicken risotto and mini beef wellingtons. Dancing and an open-bar helped everyone to unwind and have the best time!

When it came time to leave the reception, a perfect sunset was beginning to overwhelm the sky. By boat, Sami, Alex and their wedding party sailed across the bay to take photographs on the beach during this fantastic sunset.

After their fun, memorable and timeless wedding, Sami and Alex spent the rest of the week relaxing at The Emerald Grande, soaking in the sun and Sami’s new last name. Now, the couple reside in Chipley, FL.
