What You Need to Know to get the most out of your wedding photos and film.

What you need to know… To get the most out of your wedding photos and film.

By Joanna Banks Morgan

When I first started talking to the folks at Gulf Coast Bride about writing a regular column for them, we discussed what kind of information would serve it’s readers best and came up with the concept “What you need to know…” “What you need to know…” is straight talk from industry insiders, and in my last column I tackled how to ensure that you are dealing with professional vendor and not a hobbyist.

In this issue we’re sharing what you need to know to get the most out of your wedding photos and wedding videography. As professionals, I think we're all pretty comfortable with asking someone to step out of, or into, our shots. However, I know I'm not always comfortable with asking bridesmaids to spit out their gum before the ceremony. You’d be surprised how many people in the bridal party have looked at me as if I have two heads when I ask them to lose the Hubba Bubba. The thing is, no matter how discreetly they think they are doing it - on film - it will always look like a cow chewing cud! So brides, PLEASE, institute a “no chewing gum” rule, or put a bridesmaid in charge of being “gum patrol” before the cameras start rolling.

We got in touch with some of the other talented professionals Gulf Coast Bride works with, and asked them for their uncensored advice,  and here’s what they had to say...

Rae Leytham of Rae Leytham Photography says, “Something I mention to my clients is timing on the wedding day.  They see beautiful images on my site and want the same for their wedding.  But, they also don’t want to miss any of their reception by taking a lot of time out for photos.  I completely understand this, and I try to be super fast.  However, PLAN for time for photos and try REALLY hard to be on time.  So much money is invested in photography, you shouldn’t be rushing through photos!”

Mari Darr-Welch of Mari’s Paradise Images, really nailed one of our most universal requests and it has to do with the pre-ceremony pandemonium. She pleads, “Please stack all of your extraneous junk into a corner. It only makes our jobs harder if you have piles of clothing and boxes and bags everywhere. Also, if it’s at all possible, limit the number of people who are piling into the room. Everyone wants to see the bride and wish her luck before the wedding, but this does detract from the impact as you walk down the aisle. The more people you have in the room, the harder it is to make beautiful images of you getting ready.”

Amanda Suanne of Amanda Suanne Photography recommends that brides make a statement with their accessories, "Have fun when choosing your accessories.... grab some bright blue heels, a vintage bird cage veil, or anything else that shows your personality. These small details will help you achieve awesome photos that you will cherish forever!"

Dede Edwards of Dede Edwards Photography says don’t forget the foliage!  “No matter the time of year, bright florals make all the difference.  Against a white dress with an added vintage family piece, a colorful floral bouquet will make the pictures pop!”

Angela Dowling of Bella Vita Photography knows there can be too much of a good thing when it comes to documenting your wedding day. She suggests that you make it clear (in advance) to any budding photographers and/or videographers that you have hired a professional, and that they should remain seated during the ceremony.  “Behind the ceremony, and in the aisle are NOT good places for guests.  They will be in every picture that your professional photographer takes, and you may end up paying extra to have him ‘photoshopped’ out of the background of important photos like the exchange of rings or of the big kiss!”

Videographer Sarah Powers, of Sarah Powers Media, wants to remind couples to spend time together at the reception.  She says, “All the guests want to congratulate the couple at the reception, but sometimes this means they get pulled in different directions and don’t get to spend much time together. When this happens it’s unfortunate because there’s little footage of the couple enjoying the reception together.”

Ryan Manthey of Pure 7 Studios says don’t underestimate the importance of your entertainment to your wedding images. “Invest in a great DJ such as B-Boy Productions who will be sure to get the guests up on their feet and dancing. This equals fun reception pictures!"

Kim Stone of Kim Stone Photography tells us “The best advice I could give about wedding day photography is get to know your photographer beforehand. On your wedding day, you want to trust the person that will capture your most treasured memories.  My goal would be that my bride and groom are able to relax and so I know that I will capture exactly what they have asked for without having to worry about a missed photograph.”

Photographers and videographers are considered by many couples to have been their most important hires. At the end of the day, when all the toasts have been given, and the dances are done, the details which are preserved in your photos and your wedding film will help you relive the most important moments of your big day.  For more uncensored advice about getting the most out of your wedding photos and video be sure to check out www.gcbride.com.
