Honeymooning in the Mayan Riviera
By Cristol Thompson
The “I DO’s” have been said, the garter tossed and the rice thrown. Are you ready for a vacation you'll remember forever? Pack your bags and enjoy the relaxation and excitement of a honeymoon in the Mayan Riviera. From Cancun to Merida, the Mayan Riviera offers a wide variety of activities to satisfy even the most discriminating spouse.
Relaxation
We all need a little R&R from time to time, and there is no better time than right after the most planned event of your life. All-inclusive resorts are nestled along the coast of the Riviera. These full service accommodations provide activities such as lounging by the pool, sunning on the beach, spa services and even golf. Offering all meals as well as drinks, you may not even want to leave the resort grounds.
Adventure
If you are a little more adventurous and have the desire to go out and explore your surroundings, the Mayan Riviera can be an exciting destination. Ancient ruins are scattered along the Yucatan Peninsula. Walking among the mysterious and ancient artifacts can be inspiring. The most notable and best preserved ruin is Chitzen Itza. You will never forget seeing the carvings in the stone and the massive temple in person.
Nature
The coast of the Yucatan has some of the world’s most pristine waters and vast jungle habitats. There are biological parks nestled between the beaches and jungle. Xcaert Biological Park has harnessed nature’s beauty and added a variety of activities. After snorkeling down a partially underground river you can relax in a hammock overlooking the Caribbean Sea. Once you are well rested, the park offers SNUBA (a “unique, patented shallow water diving system, bridging the gap between snorkeling and scuba diving”) to explore the sea life up close, or you can even take a dip with a dolphin. If you are a scuba diver, you have to dive the beautiful coral reefs and see the exotic fish of the Caribbean.
Surrounded by maracas and sombreros, you can find some great shopping in Mexico. Playa del Carmen is a shopping paradise, offering high end apparel and a flea market on the same street. If you prefer to shop out of the tourist areas, take a trip to Merida. With the feel of a big city, Merida includes the traditional shopping of Mexico.
Nightlife
Need a night out on the town? Cancun’s Hotel Zone has some of the world’s best night clubs. The clubs range from Techno to Disco, and may have shows to keep you entertained while dancing the night away. At many of the clubs, the cover prices include drinks, so be sure to hire a taxi to take you back to your hotel.
On your honeymoon to the Mayan Riviera, rent a car and take the drive to Merida, stopping by Chitzen Itza along the way. Enjoy dinner and relax on the beach sipping drinks. Spend a day enjoying nature’s beauty. Most of all, make the effort to enjoy this special time with your new spouse – after all, the real world starts when you get back home!
